All wheel drive minivan hauling 4X8 sheets of plywood says you’re doing it wrong. ;-)

My fil uses his van as a work van and it’s massively practical.

I generally think body on frame and/or true 4x4 being not crossover

Minivans have always been roughly peak practicality for everyday applications. They’re designed to take 8x4 sheets behind the front seats. SUVs and CUVs are less practical (usually smaller, seats don’t fold flat, and/or higher deck) and less efficient (fuel) than minivans.

Unibody doesn’t necessarily mean crossover.Crossovers are generally defined as “suvs” that share a platform with a car/minivan.

I’ve always thought of the XJ as the first crossover. No frame, and while you could have it with a true 4x4 transfer case, it was one of the first to offer the Select-Trac full-time 4x4 transfer case that used viscous coupling that basically acts like the center diff in a modern AWD crossover.

Fair enough, but I’ll still argue that the Jeep is a crossover ( I’m not the only one ). The whole point of the Cherokee was to make it more car-like even if it didn’t actually share a platform with any existing vehicle. It was designed to be lighter and perform well with the 2.5L 4-cylinder compared to truck-based SUV’s like the Blazer. (Remember the I-6 wasn’t even an option until the 3rd model year.)

What about the Lada Niva, it beat the XJ by 7 years.

The responses to this post are why I love oppo...Believe it or not, there are people who would choose a crossover over a minivan because “I’m a man, I ain’t driving a minivan” even though the crossover is essentially a minivan with hinged rear doors, larger wheels, and less practicality. To the people who said a wagon large enough to also haul a sheet of plywood, peace, man, we’re on the same team. But the oppopotamuses that replied in this thread get it...it’s what works for you, and there’s a lot of useful vehicles out there.

I’d totally rock a 5-speed 5 if I can find one at a good price with a sunroof.
I also like the Matrix/Vibe, not because it’s a crossover per se, but because it’s a Toyota with a rear wiper and the awesome 2ZZ-GE. But I wish they would’ve just sold the Fielder and/or Runx over here (regular Corolla wagon and hatchback). Toyota quality, high-rpm fun, and the rear wiper.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

Minivans are extremely practical vehicles.
I own a ‘97 GMC Safari, not exactly a minivan, but I’ve hauled many things, including sacks of concrete spaced evenly all over the deck. And plywood and appliances and dozens of computers at a time.
And my family from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back THREE times.
“Grow up,” says I, to those manly men.

You can’t look at it whilst you’re driving it anyhow.
